Brooks Martin and his eccentric Aunt Mandy are always looking for a different adventure. They shiver among giant ice sculptures, sweat through a nerve wracking movie audition, and scream on the Smoky Mountain Rampage. Their second place win at the Tennessee State Fair Sweet Treat Team Championship nets them a hundred dollars and a spot on a local television show.
But they never guess that their greatest adventure will involve murder. As rifles crackle during a reenactment at their favorite Civil War historic sight, a bloody stranger shakily grabs Brooks, thrusts a scrap of paper at him, gasps a few words...and dies!
"Just a kid and an old lady," they decide to try to solve the Murder at the Oaklands Mansion by using their research skills, knowledge of history, and bending the truth just a little. Their journey takes them from a stack of dusty old books and an antique dresser, to a wild car chase and a brush with death for Brooks.
Along the way, they find danger and excitement as they search for answers to the questions "Who was that stranger? Why did he grab Brooks? Why was he murdered and...who did it?"

Murder at the Oaklands Mansion edition by Melinda Lyons Children eBooks Reviews
A good clean cozy that would suit most ages. In fact if you have children who love mysteries then this would be perfect. He has always had a special rapport with his Aunt. Maybe because they both loved adventures and excitement. Her favourite thing was doing things on the spurn of the moment. However the visit to the mansion was a long time favourite and they both learnt something new every visit. However this visit was different. The man next to them collapsed, covered in blood and managed to get some words out (which he kept repeating) before being taken to hospital. Where he later died of a gunshot wound. Are the words a clue? What would a New York antique dealer being doing in their quiet corner? Can they piece together what he wanted to convey and catch the culprit? A clear well written piece with characters that jump of the page.

Why I picked it up The combination of historical fiction and murder mystery was something I didn't want to pass up.
Why I finished it This is a delightful read for both middle graders and their families. It highlights the strong bond between a young boy and his eccentric great aunt, and the love that they have for pushing themselves to be better and better. They have a thirst for knowledge that sometimes leads them into super crazy situations. I was instantly endeared to these characters and the relationships that continue to build as the plot moves along. I liked that the story kept up a steady pace throughout that made it easy to follow along and put together the clues alongside Brooks and Aunt Mandy. And I loved that Lyons devotes a couple of chapters to a research session in the library. Plus, it highlights the fun of knowing local history and exploring the towns in which we live, even if they might not be as historically exciting as Murfreesboro. The book may seem somewhat simplistic, but this makes it ideal for reluctant and struggling readers to read by themselves or out loud. It's an intriguing, nail-biting read that will keep readers hooked and hoping for more.
